Getting to Madinah, where to stay, the etiquette of the city, Jannat al-Baqi and what to buy — a calm, practical guide to Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah.
Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah — the Illuminated City — is where the Prophet ﷺ lived for the last ten years of his life and where he is buried. Visiting it is not part of the Umrah rites, but almost every pilgrim treasures their days here.
Getting there
- By air: Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) is around 20 minutes by car from Masjid an-Nabawi.
- From Makkah: about 450 km — roughly 4½ hours by private car, or about 2½ hours on the Haramain high-speed train.
- From Jeddah airport: around 4 hours by car, or by train via the airport station.
Where to stay
The Markazia (central) area surrounds Masjid an-Nabawi. Hotels here let you walk to every prayer within minutes — the best choice for families and elderly pilgrims. Ask for the nearest gate number when you book.
Etiquette of the city
- Lower your voice and walk calmly — Madinah is a place of peace.
- Send abundant salawat (blessings) on the Prophet ﷺ.
- Visiting the Prophet's grave is done respectfully: greet him and his two companions, and make dua to Allah facing the Qibla.
Jannat al-Baqi
The historic cemetery beside the mosque is the resting place of thousands of companions and members of the Prophet's family. Men may visit, usually after Fajr and after Asr (times change, so check locally). Greet the believers buried there with the Sunnah greeting: As-salamu 'alaykum ahl ad-diyar min al-mu'minin wal-muslimin…
Weather and timing
Madinah is a little cooler than Makkah in winter, with chilly nights from December to February. Summers are very hot — plan outdoor visits for the early morning.
What to buy
- Ajwa dates — the famous dates of Madinah — and other varieties from the date market.
- Prayer mats, perfume (attar) and books from the shops around the mosque.
How many days?
Three to four days gives you time for the five prayers in Masjid an-Nabawi, a visit to the Rawdah, and a Ziyarat tour without rushing.
