Badr Ziyarat: visiting the site of the first great battle of Islam

What happened at Badr in Ramadan 2 AH, the martyrs' cemetery, the Mountain of the Angels and how to plan the trip from Madinah.

Badr Ziyarat: visiting the site of the first great battle of Islam

Badr lies roughly 150 km south-west of Madinah, about two hours by car. It was here, on 17 Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah (624 CE), that the first great battle of Islam took place.

What happened at Badr

Around 313 Muslims, poorly equipped, met a Quraysh army of about 1,000. Allah granted the believers victory and called the day Yawm al-Furqan — the Day of the Criterion between truth and falsehood (Al-Anfal 8:41).

The Qur'an describes how Allah supported them with angels: "I will reinforce you with a thousand of the angels, following one another" (Al-Anfal 8:9). Surah Al-Anfal as a whole was revealed about the battle, and Surah Aal-Imran recalls it: "Allah had already given you victory at Badr while you were few in number" (3:123).

Fourteen companions were martyred. On the Quraysh side, seventy were killed — among them many of their leaders, including Abu Jahl — and seventy were taken captive.

What you can see today

  • The martyrs' cemetery — a walled burial ground where the fourteen martyrs of Badr rest. Visitors greet them from outside the wall.
  • Jabal al-Mala'ika (the Mountain of the Angels) — the hill linked by tradition to the descent of the angels.
  • Masjid al-Areesh — built where the Prophet's command shelter stood; here he ﷺ spent the night before the battle in prayer.
  • The open plain of the battlefield itself, with the sand dunes of the Badr valley.

Planning the trip

  • Go as a half-day trip from Madinah in a private car; it is not on the main Madinah–Makkah highway.
  • Leave early and carry water — there is little shade at the site.
  • Combine it with reading Surah Al-Anfal on the way; the places come alive.

A reminder

Badr teaches that victory comes from Allah, not from numbers. Pilgrims often say the silence of the plain is one of the most powerful moments of their journey.
