Makkah first or Madinah first? Train, private car or bus? Distances, travel times and the Miqat rules that decide the best order for your trip.
How you move between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah shapes your whole Umrah. Here are the distances, the options and the order that works best for most pilgrims.
The key distances
| Route | Distance | By car | By train |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah airport (JED) → Makkah | about 100 km | 1 h – 1 h 15 | about 45 min* |
| Makkah → Madinah | about 450 km | 4 h 30 | about 2 h 30 |
| Jeddah airport → Madinah | about 420 km | about 4 h | about 2 h* |
| Madinah airport (MED) → Masjid an-Nabawi | about 20 km | 20–25 min | — |
*Train times are from the airport station; add time for the transfer to and from your hotel. Check current timetables and fares on the official Haramain High Speed Railway website.
Option 1: Makkah first (most popular)
Fly into Jeddah → Makkah for Umrah → Madinah → fly home from Madinah or Jeddah.
- You perform Umrah at the start, while you are fresh.
- Enter ihram before landing in Jeddah (on the plane).
Option 2: Madinah first
Fly into Madinah → spend 3–4 days → travel to Makkah for Umrah.
- A gentle start, especially for elderly pilgrims.
- Your Miqat is Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), about 10 km from Masjid an-Nabawi. By car you stop there to enter ihram. By train, put on your ihram clothes in Madinah and make your intention when the train passes the Miqat.
Train, private car or bus?
- Haramain train — fastest between the cities; book ahead in busy seasons. Stations are outside the central areas, so you need a transfer at each end, and luggage allowances apply.
- Private car — door to door, hotel to hotel, with stops for prayer and rest whenever you wish. The best value for families and groups with luggage.
- Bus — the cheapest option, but slower and less flexible.
Our recommendation
For families and groups, a private car from hotel to hotel removes the stress of stations and luggage. For couples travelling light, the train is quick and comfortable.
